Key takeaways
- Products, customers, orders, CMS pages and blog content can all move from Magento to Shopify.
- Magento attributes become Shopify options, metafields and metaobjects — plan the mapping first.
- Magento extensions are replaced by Shopify features, apps or custom development.
- Every URL changes, so a complete 301 redirect map protects rankings.
- Customer passwords can't be migrated; plan how customers sign in after the move.
Magento — now Adobe Commerce, with the free Magento Open Source edition — is powerful but demanding: servers, security patches, upgrades and extensions all need developer time. Many brands move to Shopify to spend that budget on growth instead. Here is how a Magento to Shopify migration works.
What moves across
- Products: Simple and configurable products, images, prices, inventory and SEO fields.
- Customers and orders: Customer records, addresses and order history.
- Content: CMS pages and blog posts, with images and internal links.
- URLs: Old product, category and page URLs, mapped to their new Shopify addresses.
Mapping Magento to Shopify
- Configurable products: Become products with variants. Shopify supports up to three options per product, so products with more need restructuring.
- Attributes and attribute sets: Become metafields (per product) and metaobjects (shared content such as size charts).
- Categories: Become collections — manual, or automated by rules.
- Store views and websites: Become markets with their own languages and currencies, or separate expansion stores on Shopify Plus.
- Customer groups and B2B: Map to Shopify's native B2B companies and catalogues, now available on every plan.
Replacing extensions
List every Magento extension and what it actually does. Each one is replaced by a built-in Shopify feature, an App Store app or a custom app. It is a good moment to drop features nobody uses.
Protecting SEO
Magento URLs often end in .html and nest categories in the path; Shopify uses /products/ and /collections/. Crawl the old site, map every indexed URL to its new equivalent and import the redirects before launch. The process mirrors our WooCommerce to Shopify migration guide, which covers redirects and post-launch checks in detail.
Customer accounts
Passwords are stored encrypted and can't be transferred between platforms. After the move, customers sign in with a one-time code or set a new password, depending on your account settings — tell them in advance by email.
Migration steps
- Audit the Magento store: data, extensions, integrations and traffic.
- Design the Shopify data model and theme.
- Migrate data to a test store and check it carefully.
- Rebuild integrations — ERP, inventory, shipping and email.
- Import redirects, test end to end, then switch the domain.
- Monitor orders and Search Console daily in the first weeks.
